Burghfield Blaze Open 2015 - race report

The Blaze Open meeting season kicked off with the Burghfield Open this weekend. Nineteen Blazes and four Fires crossed the line in what turned out to be quite blustery conditions.

On the first beat of the first race on Saturday, Ben Pickering found himself holding a tiller extension of two parts - not quick, so a trip to shore for running repairs left Rob Jones clear to the finish, chased by locals Mike Bell and David Angwin. Vistor Myles Mence was also well in the mix.

The second race was a repeat of the first, but this time it was Rob Jones who broke his tiller extension - Ben sailed to victory with a consistent Mike Bell in second and fellow local Simon Beddows in third.
Mystery surrounded the whereabouts of Myles, who was last seen capsizing at the leeward mark and is presumed to have been abducted by aliens (or who might just have had gear failure - Ed). If anyone finds him, please return him to the Blaze class, as we miss him.

Race three saw a battle between Ben and Rob who both finished with complete tiller extensions, followed home by Mike Bell.

The fleet repaired to the clubhouse for beer and chilli and for the sea sailors to puzzle over how the wind direction can change by 20 degrees on every leg....

Sunday saw an early start, as the racing was interleaved with the club races. The wind had been forecast to rise during the day and managed to produce even more wild shifts and gusty conditions than the day before.

The first race of the day saw Rob Jones sail back over the start line, believing that he had been over at the start. This allowed Ben Pickering to sail clean away, chased by locals David Angwin and Pete Barlow. By the end of this race, conditions had deteriorated, but there was a good battle for 5th between locals Simon Beddows, Mike Bell, David Smith (normally a Laser sailor) Martin Preston and visitor Nick Ripley - a battle which Simon eventually won.

Only 10 Blazes ventured out in the afternoon in the now very gusty conditions. The last race and the event were decided on the finish line of the last race, as Rob Jones was hit by a header on his last tack, opening the door for Ben Pickering to beat him to the line.
